The Sleuth (a.k.a. Sir Lock) is a famous but clumsy London detective who appears in a series of stories produced by American studios for the foreign market. Created by Carson Van Osten, The Sleuth was used for the first time by Carl Fallberg in 1975 in the story "The Great Winks Robbery" drawn by Al Hubbard. He is a sort of English detective from the previous century inspired by novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional character Sherlock Holmes. Like Sherlock he wears a deerstalker hat, smokes a pipe, plays the violin (horribly), and uses a magnifying glass. But there is a great difference between him and Holmes: The Sleuth is incredibly inept! He is incapable of solving crimes without the help of Mickey Mouse who plays the role of Dr. Watson. Stories featuring The Sleuth have been produced up to 1989 and introduced some other characters, such as the Sleuth's primary adversary Professor Nefarious who is a sort of Dr. Moriarty. Prof. Nefarious is leader of a gang of criminals in London: Flip-lip, Sidney and l'armadillo. Appeared in an episode of "DuckTales" called "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. McDuck" under the name of Shedlock Jones. In this incarnation he is sort of a combination in both name and appearance of The Sleuth and of Mickey's other detective friend Shamrock Bones. He is searching for clues to the whereabouts of the nefarious Professor Hoodi-doodi, when the Nephews and Uncle $crooge are visiting London and seek out his help in finding a petty criminal called Jack the Tripper. As it turns out the Professor and the Tripper are the same criminal. Apparently Shedlock Jones is also a Junior Woodchuck. |
