BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS: Dangerous Dan McBoo and Idgit the Midget are criminal companions and foils of Mickey Mouse and Goofy. According to sources I've read, they first appeared in „Treasure of Oomba Loomba,¾ a continuing story "Walt Disney's Comics & Stories #313-316 with art by Paul Murry. However, the stories indicate that Mickey had encounted them previously, and was personally responsible for sending Dan McBoo to prison when he testified against him. I have check all of my available issues of WDC&S and MM and could not find any previous stories involving Mickey and Dan. (Note: I do not possess a complete set of either comic book series, unfortunately, so it might have occurred in one of my missing issues, or the information was merely inclided in the #313 tale just to give the character some familiarity). In this tale, Chief O'Hara warns Mickey that Dangerous Dan has escaped from prison and to be careful. Later, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Captain Churchmouse travel to South Africa to meet up with Capt. Churchmouse's old friend Captain Hazzard to hunt for buried treasure. The key to finding the treasure is Mickey's old pal, Spooks the Gorilla. Apparently Captian Hazzard acquired Spooks when he was a baby from a tereitory known as Oomba Loomba in the Jungles of Jujubwa in South Africa. As it is now revealed, Spooks is a so-called "homing-ape." No matter where he goes he can always find his way back to his home in Africa. This is important because many years ago Capt. Hazzard had to quickly bury a treasure worth millions of dollars when he and his safari group were attacked by the native "Leopard People" (who also inhabitted Spooks' homeland). Unfortunately for Mickey and company, Dangerous Dan had revenge on his mind when he accidentally overheard the treasure hunt plans. Desguising themselves, Dan and his tiny sidekick, Idgit, took passage on Captain Churchmouse's ship. Later Dan and Idjit tried to foil their hunt on several ocassions, and when they finally found the treasure, and the whole party was attacked by the Leopard People, they run off with it. Spooks, who had rejoined his own tribe of gorillas, returned with them, like a cavalry, and saved our heroes, captured Dan and Idjit, and returned the treasure to Mickey. Dan and Idjit were returned to prison, and Mickey made, what might be to a "Duck-fan" a most heinous blasphemy. Dan and Idjit returned many, many more times to annoy Mickey and Goofy.

WORKING THEORIES: Another "Dangerous Dan" (who looked nothing like Mickey's foe) was encountered by Uncle $crooge in the DuckTales episode: "Back to the Klondike" (Nov. 28, 1987). However, this Dangerous Dan was the villianous companion of a Weasel look-alike who had teamed-up against $crooge to steal his gold. This team-up was very similar to those that have occured in many Mickey Mouse stories which featured Weasel and a big, fat dogface villian, both of which also ocassionally served as Bad Pete's lackeys when they were not working without him. The main difference, however, was that, when the Dan look-alike was with Weasel (and when he was with Pete), he was usually far less intelligent and was never in charge of the cirmes being committed. In fact, there seems to be a Mickey-villian heirarchy involved which begins with Sylvester Shyster, then to Pete, then Weasel, then Dan, and finally Idjit. The only other differences were that Dan always has a moustache, while the big lug's look-alike is usually just horribly unshaven, and that he is rarely ever given a name, and when he is, it's never the same in the next story. Dan and Idjit are always treated as though they are completely seperate characters from those who accompany Pete and Weasel. The resemblance is notable, though.
