BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS: In the original Italian fairy tale, the Cricket played a very minor role, but in the Disney version of Pinocchio, he was given a prominent role as Pinocchio's "official conscience," so dubbed by the Blue Fairy, who wanted Jiminy to teach Pinocchio to be a good little boy. Jiminy later graduated from this role to become a hallmark character of the Disney enterprises. Jiminy became the host of many Disney television specials and programs and was even briefly given his own comic book. Jiminy Cricket is as well known as Tinker Bell as a corporate symbol.

LITTLE KNOWN SECRETS: The name of the conscientious little cricket was derived from the phrase "Jiminy Crickets!" whcih denotes surprise or bewilderment, and has existed since at least 1848. It was first used by Disney in the film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" where the dwarfs exclaim the phrase upon returning from the mine.
