BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS: Benny the Cab is an anthropomorphized taxicab who first appeared in the animated feature "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." Like all toons (according to the movie) Benny hails from Toontown. Benny becomes Roger, Jessica and Eddie Valiant's mode of transportation and like most toons, Benny is capable of some amazing, but whacky antics. Benny rescues them when they are persued by Judge Doom's weasel lackeys, and was a regular in the Roger Rabbit and Toontown comics.
HISTORICAL FACTS: In Gary Wolf's original novel, "Who Censored Roger Rabbit" there is no "Benny the Cab." There is, however, a "Benny the Beatle" who, like the Cab, helps our heroes, though his role is much smaller. In the book Roger and Eddie need to find out some information about a Tea Kettle (which is another story), so they go to the junk dealer (Benny) who originally sold it. Benny is a human size beatle who stands on his hind legs and drives a hard bargain when you want to buy something. Like Eddie said, "Mental note to myself, next time I come to this guy again, bring a can of insecticide."
LITTLE KNOWN SECRETS: In the movie, when the producers needed to show the "live action" character of Eddie where he is driving around in Benny, the animators had to have actor Bob Hoskins drive around in a little go-cart, then animate Benny over it. However, for some scenes where Benny has to do some tricky maneuvers they actually didn't use Hoskins or the go-cart. Instead they just drew both characters as pure animation. One example is when Benny has to jumg up onto a bridge, so if you freeze frame the video you can tell that it's really an animated Eddie.
