Subject: Re: [RadPsyNet-Members] Focusing on Chemistry Instead of Compassion
Hi
Dr. Glasser's approach is in line with the perspective of the "client/survivor" people who fight "forced treatment." The California Network of M.H. Clients has called itself, "A Voice for Choice." I have a t-shirt from them with that slogan on it.
However M.L. King Jr.'s advocacy goes beyond Glasser's "theory of achieving satisfying relationships." It speaks to the fundamental role of the values of both "freedom" and "dignity." Without "dignity" being stressed, we fall into a Foucault-style "clinical gaze" problematic. Retraumatization is a commonplace difficulty that arises under that circumstance.

Focusing on Chemistry Instead of Compassion Psychiatry Takes Another Step in the Wrong Direction
The "critical psychology" needed to practice "dignity" is employed by the Democratic Psychiatry movement in Italy, for instance.
The problem is not just that "chemistry" is the fashion today but that the logic of "relatedness" needs to be worked out better, both in regards to imagination and in regards to sociohistorical grounding. See for instance Gergen and McNamee, Relational Responsibility.
