This afternoon Saturday July 15th Medea Benjamin,
Green
Party candidate for U.S. Senate, spoke at
the Active-Fest 2000 event in Boonville. Following
this, a group of mental health clients met with
Medea for about an hour. This group included
Sharon Clausen, Alison Mills, Andrew Phelps, and
four Santa Clara clients Tom Jurgensen, Jose
Rangel, Almalicia Castillo, and Barry Fultonberg.
Some local (Mendocino) clients also joined the
discussion.
We talked from the heart and at length about the
issues which move us, from IOC/AB 1800 to
client-driven activities and self-help. Tom
explained how saying thats crazy when you mean
thats a mistake has a discriminatory overtone.
Medea heard him, and she heard us. She emerged
with not only a newfound sense of what we are
about but with a determination to connect with our
issues in the course of her campaign.
Medea is running against incumbent Senator Dianne
Feinstein and also a Republican challenger Tom
Campbell. We wish her the very best and it must
be said she made the kind of human contact with us
that wins votes.
