Subject: Re: [s-acc] medical model
Kmo:
I tried to become a psychologist, but
I was prevented ..Like you, I feel that being a psychologist wouldn't make me a "scientist." I did however go on and get my degree in mathematics. Take note of the
dedication to my thesis: .. in the capacity of mathematician I do have a certain "scientific" level attained. You wrote:
I will have more to say about this. I feel the issue of the medical model goes back to Freud's imitation of physics and then moves to Kraepelin and incureable genetic schizophrenia and his horrible "clinical phenomenology" and the eugenics solution.
I relate to Foucault's "archaeological" critique. Others on this list have cited DeLeuze, Guattari.
I needed a "coping strategy" and so I went into "dynamical systems." I figured Freud claimed that "psychodynamics" was the key to his system and yet he had only the level of training in calculus/dynamical systems that you'd get for an M.D. degree. Maybe that's what you mean by "imitation of physics." Anyway I'm teaching a beginning calculus class starting on Tuesday and I hope my coping strategy still obtains.
:-)For this list, we can't expect people to "go out and become scientists." We can hopefully provide some of the networking needed to work together based on a critique of the medical model; that's what we've been doing, since this list was founded 10 years ago.
Things will "take off" when we are "good and ready."
