Dcb has a point, however it's important to take torture seriously, also.
There's a whole problem of learning relational ways of being instead of objectified ways of being. That perspective has been developed by Ken Gergen, Sheila McNamee, John Shotter in particular.
I write here as an activist in the "client/survivor" movement. In the "first wave" of our movement it's bumps & bruises on the one hand and "ego trips" on the other.
Your professor should be attentive to the "human rights movement" perspective and not just the personality double-binds we face when we engage seriously the 'madness' issue.
