Hi!

I seem to be involved in two matters which from a Left point of view are kind of pedestrian, but which in the m.h. context are kind of explosive. This is a ‘heads up’ about what I’m thinking about; I need insight, feedback, support, criticism, whatever.

#1 is ‘coalition’

Now I’m seeing that the clients movement is ready for coalition, at least it is our responsibility to PROPOSE how to do it. So I’m thinking about what kind of proposal to make and how to make it. Last nights fantasy called itself the “Choice and Quality Services Link.”

Likely, but not necessarily, this would mean a direct conversation with Sally on Saturday at the Bay Area Network meeting. So I need support. My fondest wish is to entice Bonnie to come to that meeting, given the transcendent nature of the opening here. Anyway, working on this is going to be important. And obviously, this is the available time and place, but it isn’t the ONLY time and place, so lots of other scenarios might be imagined. ..

#2 is ‘union recognition’

I met today with Nancy Pena and we doped out the ‘educational retreat’ plan. I’m writing this almost right afterwards — I’m waiting for the gridlock going north to abate — so this all hasn’t really been reflected on much. But we would be training top managers & the ‘stakeholders’ group. Total of maybe 20-22 persons PLUS Tom J. and Barry who are sitting “on all sides of the fence” here. Includes hehehe the head of Santa Clara County NAMI. Would (I project) involve about 15 of us. Day would be a Friday. Would involve Nancy working on providers like El Hogar (Maria), Sonoma Co. Mental Health (Syl), Cal State San Bernardino School of Social Work (Debi), etc. Turning Point in Modesto (B.J.) also? Obviously it’s all paid and there’s honorariums and hotel if need be as well as travel. As Nancy says, “It will be great!”

Also to include Stephen Blum and Phil Cushman of CSPP. Coni Kalinowski has demurred due to moving to Las Vegas, but I’m still hoping maybe she would change her mind if Nancy called her personally. Nancy is now starting to process the papers involved in getting me hired on as a consultant (for this event, plus an opening for more). Will have a followup planning-meeting-in-detail, committee to consist of Nancy, me, Jose, Alison, Stephen Blum, Teea and Luann (from M.H. staff) and Barry. Visions, insights, organizational homilies, please let me know!

So the traffic won’t abate soon and I’ve got a pile of exams to grade and I’m already exhausted.  :-(  Phil though you’ll be glad to hear that we’ve got 25 computers up and running Windows 95/Office 97 at Autumn St.

Warm regards

Andrew
