The issue is not hate/or not, it’s the
political effort to maintain a hate campaign.
You can hate someone and do something to them and it’s not necessarily a hate crime. But if one uses the tools of bigotry, the Klan hood or the anti-gay abuse, then there is also the makings of a ‘hate crime’. That’s what Sylvia means I think by ‘hate speech’. In this case, the issue is what kind of campaign NAMI is planning for the California legislature this coming year. Just as I recently posted on MHOCCA a Bay Area NAMI working document. I think that when we get Torrey into his ‘hate speech’ routine, it is an agitational piece rather than a propaganda piece.
