I know there is a debate that the SNCC work in the south could not be exported to the northern cities, but that unfortunately was not tested enough.
Today that challenge has been taken up with the movement for community engagement. At De Anza College (in Cupertino, CA - home of Apple Inc.) where I work, there is an administration committed to "community engagement" on the model above; the Institute for Community and Civic Engagement (ICCE) in fact has a new building. The President of the College represents this advocacy: The ICCE has had leadership from ethnic advocacies representing the Philippines, Puerto Rico; now it's the Philosophy Dept. I networked similarly with a clinical psychologist at the Boston 2010 Conference - from Massachusetts - who lives by a similar standard.
In the 60s I participated in a weekly encounter group whose co-leader was a mentor for Bobby Seale. That lent complexity to the "violence" claim.
