Subject: RE: [psysr-disc] Juan Cole | Obama's foreign policy report card

Hello:

Where in the New York Times does Stanley "There's No Such Thing As Free Speech and It's a Good Thing Too" Fish argue against Bush torture policies? (I assume he argues against Obama torture policies as well. Right?)

Wrong. It's from one year ago today, Psychology and Torture. His complaint is with the APA.

Employing psychological skills in the course of any verbal interaction - be it a domestic conversation, classroom teaching, a performance in a law court, or an interrogation - will always have the effect of subordinating the facts and the truth of the matter to the desire for an outcome.

This is precisely the accusation traditionally made against the ancient discipline of which psychology is the heir - rhetoric, or the art of persuasion.
