Some of this goes back to the specific history of U.C. Berkeley as it relates to the "Free Speech Movement" and various consequences. Dan Siegel who spoke for the Lawyer's Guild last week, for instance, was the man who stood on Sproul Steps May 15, 1969 and said, "Let's go take the Park." That led to the People's Park riot where 100 persons were shot. I myself was shot at by the Oakland Police, but .. fortunately they missed.

There is a balance between "Dean behavior" and the choices of the administration. The Law Dean here can be measured against other Deans, which is what takes some insight and experience. In my instance, the personality psychologist who defended me against Zimbardo's wife's character assassination of me as a "terrorist," went on to become a – longtime – Dean of Letters & Science. When I got my Ph.D. (in mathematics) he came across the street in order to watch me graduate.
