Excellent, well put.

Uvw reports authentically about what it looks like from the behavioral 'provider' point of view.

Our movement started with "anti-psychiatry" (and denial of psychology). That does not show well what sensitive people with integrity, in the 'provider' role, will notice and feel.

The critique we develop of "influencing attitudes and changing behaviors" has to be sensitive and responsive to this kind of 'authenticity'. Otherwise we are no better off than the "peer-run recovery center" below which has to support professional interaction w/o having sufficient basis for trust.

And I keep thinking M.L. King, Jr.'s advocacy gives the possibility of constructing such a dialogue. Uvw's training — as I learned on another list — is [1] English and [2] influenced by Ian Parker. [Parker and my "hero" John Shotter wrote/edited Deconstructing Social Psychology in 1984.]

Thanks, Uvw.

Last week I had the misfortune of being ordered to a 'mandatory' training regarding ID Theft by the CEO of a peer-led Recovery center. I expected the usual HIPPA regs/ID Theft is an increasing problem, safeguard yours and your participants ID at all costs.

What I sat through was a blatant sales pitch by an insurance salesperson who firstly blamed immigrants for ID Theft (although he did have the IQ to change Mexican to Belgian, since we are in AZ) then went on to say how drug addicts will go through the garbage and piece together even shredded information. He said the Company was offering the coverage as a 'Benefit' that would cost employees $30.
