Auburn Council 6149 Legionaries of Christ Last updated July 14, 2005 Immaculate Conception Apostolic School 28000 Rollins Lake Road Colfax, CA 95713 Ph (530) 389-8612 Fax (530) 389-8614 June 7, 2005 Dear Bill Gilsdorf: It was good to talk with you last Friday. Thanks for coming up to the school to help out again on the boys retreat! As you suggested, I am including a partial list of what we are working on here at ICAS and some immediate needs. In case any of the Knights are unfamiliar with the great things going on here, I am including a brief description about ICAS at the end as well. Maybe the Knights know young men interested in the school. The needs: Bunk beds: If someone has a lead on these, we need about 20 sets with mattresses. Comforters (matching blue), pillows, sheets and blankets. Ladders: With all of the building, we are in need of ladders and scaffolding. Water pipe: We are looking for the best price on about 3,500 feet of 4 inch ABS water pipe. We will be running a line to our new ball fields. Fans: We need some good commercial fans for when the heat hits this summer. Cash donations: towards our fund-raising drive would be extremely helpful. We have many on-going projects and maintenance issues. Some urgent issues in this initial phase are: WELL WATER: our well and water treatment plant is 20 years old and needs upgrading. Estimate cost: $4,000.00. SEPTIC SYSTEMS: the systems on site were deemed inadequate and out of code, compelling us to build 3 new septic systems. Permits were granted, but expire in October 2005, so we must build these systems this summer. Estimated cost: $30,000.00. BATHHOUSE: We lack sufficient number of showers and toilets. We found a decent used modular bathhouse. Cost: $7,000.00. ENGINEERING WORK: The County is nearing completion on the Environmental Review of our project, but requires a Plate 27-1 map. The engineering firm charges $3,500.00. MAIN LODGE: Some of the T 1-11 siding needs to be replaced. Estimated cost $1,000.00. GRAVEL: we are very grateful to Mr. Chevreaux who donated much gravel, but we are in need of much more. KITCHEN UPGRADES: code requires us to install a commercial dishwasher ($3,000.00) and refrigerator ($3,000.00), upgrade the fire suppression system ($2,000.00), and redo the linoleum flooring in the kitchen, food storage and dishwasher rooms ($8,000.00 est.). Total: $61,500.00 NB: checks payable to: ICAS On behalf of Father John Curran and the School, I once again wish to thank you and all of the Knights who have come to our aid. In doing so, we are able to help these young men in their first steps towards the priesthood. We are especially grateful to God because all five of our graduating seniors decided to become candidates for the seminary and, God willing, enter the novitiate in September. Sincerely in Christ, Patrick Huckins Business Manager ICAS bmcolfax@arcol.org, or call Pat on his cell phone 530-401-0936 Fr. John Curran, LC Principal ICAS, icas-ca@legionaries.org Immaculate Conception Apostolic School (ICAS) in Colfax opened in September 2003 with 15 young men interested in the priesthood. We nearly doubled last year to 27. There are high expectations for next year. The students come from the western States, and there are a few local boys. ICAS provides the environment a young man needs as he explores a possible call to the priesthood. ICAS is centered on Christ. Each day we come together for morning prayers, Mass, a half-hour directed prayer, the Rosary, Gospel reflection, Exposition and Benediction, and night prayers. Confessions are offered every night. ICAS strives for academic excellence. We lacked adequate classrooms this year, so the students have been commuting daily to St Dominics and holding classes in the CCD building. The curriculum is college prep, the teaching staff experienced and the students highly motivated. ICAS offers ample times for sports: physical exercise and team sports strengthen the body and teach teamwork, perseverance, charity and fortitude. The students also work a lot, several times teaming up with the Knights! ICAS campuses are located in Colfax, Center Harbor New Hampshire, Cornwall Ontario (Canada), and this summer we will be opening a new school in Rolling Prairie IN. Throughout the year we offer on-campus retreats for boys and young men. These provide a great opportunity to grow in friendship with Christ and get to know our school firsthand. Dads are always welcome to come to ICAS while their sons are on retreat. The Summer Orientation Course (this year July 25-August 24) gives a boy interested in the priesthood the opportunity to experience life as a student at ICAS. The four week program combines prayer, study, and sports with summer fun and the companionship of other boys with similar interests. For more information on ICAS contact: icas@legionaries.org. 530-401-0936 July 14, 2005 Letter from Fr. John Curran: Happy feast day. The apostolics and precandidates are on vacation and we are all very much looking forward to the summer program which starts soon. In our immediate preparations now, I would like to see if you could please check with your contacts to see if anyone can donate an RV trailer to ICAS. Ideally it would have a shower and toilet (kitchen not necessary, but most come equipped with kitchen). We do not have enough lodging for the Legionary priests and brothers assigned to ICAS for the summer program and during the school year, as you know, we lack housing for our religious. We are working diligently to build the apostolic school, but it will take us a couple of years to have the appropriate and suitable permanent lodging we need and we are permitted to use trailers. So for this summer, by July 25 2005, we need at least 2 more trailers for our priests. Please do all you can to help us resolve this urgent need. I hope you can come up for a visit! Be assured of my prayers.
