Some of our first activities included:
Setting up a telephone committee. A Council camping trip at Woodchuck Flat. A float in the 4th of July Parade. The St. Patrick's dinner dance.
We tried unsuccessfully to get the beer booth at the Auburn District Fair but got the "Corn on the Cob" concession instead. This turned out to be one of our best events for many years to come, even though we never made much of a profit, and the Council Brothers were always available to help. We held our charter dinner, and received our Council Charter on Sept. 7, l969. The cost was $3.50 per couple and after spending $l0l.00 for food, $57.00 on bar supplies, and $l9.00 on table decorations. We made a net profit $9l.60. Our Council was chartered in honor of John F. Kennedy. During the early 1970 the Council donated a lot of time and effort to repair work on St. Joseph School. We cleaned and painted the classrooms, re-built the kitchen, bought a new stove and refrigerator and did some gardening and replanting. We also had a float in most of the parades in Auburn. Our floats were acknowledged by all, as some of the best, letting the community know who are the Knights of Columbus. The Council entered a float in the Auburn District Fair entitled "The Santa Maria" and won the grand prize trophy. We put in l26 hours of work on this and spent $3l.76 for supplies. A picture of the float appeared in the Auburn Journal. Listed are a few of the donations made during the first years of the council. Donated l5 aprons to Placer High School kitchen. Bought first aid kit for Chana High School. Our Council is a supporter of: The St. Joseph Patrons Club on most of their requests for funds. St. Joseph Mardi Gras, the main fund raiser of the school. Mt. St. Joseph Seminary. The life of the unborn and anti abortion programs. The youth in this area, including St. Joseph School and several scouting programs. The community Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Basket programs. Our Council started the Bingo program in l978, which allows the Council to help many worthy causes and help reduce the church debt. Bingo is still in operation to this day and doing very well.
