I trust all went well on your midnight ride (I thought that was
supposed to be Paul Revere). Go for the Mac then you'll be all set
for Y3K:-) I've got 1988 vintage Macs working as email servers at
my school and I didn't have to think twice about the 2000 roll
over, the few PC's we had in the instructional area are long dead
and buried.

Subject: PC800: WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE OPTIONAL 12 VOLT OUTPUT?
To: pc800@hpc.uh.edu (PC800)
Hi Gang --
Installing my Kenwood/Hondaline and note that the PC800 Service Manual states
that there is a 12 volt optional connection [4 pin] -- anybody know where
it's located? This is the proper take off for the radio and the installation
instructions simply state to use it, but doesn't say where to find it. I
found a couple of 4 pin connectors under the seat but both are fitted with
small potted plugs -- are these active [diodes] or simply safety plugs?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary here.
Was disappointed..sigh...
Have three computers, one is an old AST Bravo 486x25 notebook,
which I purchased..ages ago. Still running strong, no problem.
Second computer is a 486 dx2 50..nothing wrong..going to pop in a
Evergreen 586 chip into it.
Lastly, my PB 133 Pent. Nada problems.

Emile;
Yes your brain is Millenium Proof, just not English or Cultural Proof!
Sorry about that! It's one of those jokes that we take for granted in North
America that probably makes no sense outside where you would not have heard
the childhood song growing up. I assume you grew up primarily in the
Netherlands and would not have been singing traditional English songs from
North America at school.
As young children in North America, most of us came to know a traditional
song that had lines
something like this:
Knick Knack, Patty wack!
Give the Dog a Bone!
This old man came
Rolling Home!
Having heard the song so often as children in Canada and the US, the Kermit
joke's punch line rhymes of course and immediately triggers our childhood
memories, evoking a laugh from all, except those who have become too jaded
or old. I train hundreds of students per year, many of whom have immigrated
from all over the world, particularly Europe. We take many expressions for
granted that often make no sense to a different culture or someone whose
mother tongue is not English.
For example we use a little humor in our school's on-screen computer
enrolment form:
We ask how well they want to learn AutoCAD. One of the answers:
"Walk on AutoCAD water!" is never understood by certain ethnic or cultural
backgrounds as it is a play on the traditional Christian belief that Jesus
was
perfect and walked on water. It is always quickly understood with a brief
clarification by those who usually are still learning English.
The reverse is also true, I do not have the good fortune of speaking any
other language fluently, but have often listened with great interest while
other common language expressions are "translated" back into English,
usually unsuccessfully, sometimes because of the word play that can not
translate.

Nothing happened here at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, or at
least I haven't heard of anything. This whole place practically
is one big computer, but nothing changed. Of course KLM
spent an enormous amount of money to make sure it wouldn't.
They replaced the computers here and even replaced the
Windows NT operating system twice to make sure they had
a millennium proof system. One pier was given it's own
independent power supply as a backup during the change.
Two of the five runways were full of parked aircraft as
there was hardly any plane airborn during the yearchange,
mainly because no one wanted to fly but also because
certain regions (eastern Europe, Africa etc) couldn't
guarantee a working NAV and ATC system. Too bad I
couldn't make a picture of it, it was dark and foggy.
Right now it's dark and 6 degrees outside with fog in some
places with visibility under 50 meters and I'm getting ready to
take off towards home : ).

All clear in Oregon. The tower that went down yesterday, causing a one
second delay in power transmission (DC) to California, was 30 miles from
here; probably a prank.
A visitor last night, who works at a credit union, said there would be some
minor problem with ATMs here, but possibly no one would be saying anything
in advance.
The city employees had an all nighter--I think an excuse for a party--and
I'll know next week if anything untoward happened.
All in all, I think my French toast tasted slightly better this morning than
it would have if I had eaten it last year sometime. Perhaps I added a bit
more almond flavoring.
Two snow flurries this morning; current temp at 12:45 is 38.7. Blue High
Sky. I may go for a short ride just to share in spirit with Rich and
others.
And just what is it that is so right about Viennese waltzes on New Year's
Day?

Hi Emile and others.
A good friend of mine is in the airline industry, and she heard that
there were all of 10 people at the airport in Los Angeles.... I'm
sure it wasn't the most profitable day for the airline industry.
Things here in Ottawa, Canada have been pretty quiet. No known Y2K
problems, although the dishwasher wasn't working this morning. (It
turned out to be a non-Y2K related problem!)
Happy Millennium everyone.....

From: pc800@sfcs.k12.ny.us (PC800 Rider)
I just got back from a wonderful New Year's Day 2000 ride of 80
miles among three of the Finger Lakes here. The Sun was shining,
temperature got up to 51F, and at one point I actually got so hot I
had to turn off my heated clothing. I saw five other motorcycles
out today on my trip. I was humbled by the macho stupidity of the
two Harley riders I came upon who were both riding with summer
style skull cap helmets (hardly enough there to call a helmet
though) and no windshield, just sunglasses. You can bet I was
jealous of their bright red ears and noses. In reverence for their
display of motorcycle machismo I turned my thermostat down a couple
of notches:-)
I would have gone farther, but my 3 AM bedtime after ringing in,
and blasting in, the New Year made breakfast a bit more like
lunchtime so I lost a bit of the great sunlight.
I only wish I could ride the Yankee Smuggler to Toronto on Friday
for the International Motorcycle show this coming weekend. I've
heard from a couple of Canadian Coasters that they will definitely
be there, but no definites from the Sates.

For anyone wondering, after riding 110 miles today, I can assure you that
the PC is fully Y2K compliant. AutoLean is fine (actually, the AutoLean was
working better than the rider for the first 10 miles - had to get the "feel"
of things again...)
Boy, it felt good to get out there and ride. Saw no fewer than a dozen
others out riding also. No heated clothes and it felt great. Toes are a
tad bit cold, but they'll warm up soon.
Still should be nice again tomorrow here. May ride another 50 miles. Gotta
make sure that the battery gets recharged really well... :-)

When a battery goes dead, it shortens the life of the battery. Get a
Battery Tender and your battery won't go dead and therefore will last
longer. Jump starting doesn't hurt a battery but the fact that it died
does. A battery will lose it's charge when just sitting. Get the Tender.

It has been done, but I have read authoritative things that say do not use a
car battery to jump start a bike. There is some fragile stuff in the Black
Box that could get toasted.
Per Steve's Battery Tender comment: Secondo came with one screwed to the
bottom of the right side cargo bay. Must have been a dealer or very astute
owner installation; there are little rubber grommets in the holes the wires
pass through and everything is very tidy.
When there is a sit time ahead, I just lift the lid, plug in the Tender (It
has a very short 110v pigtail on it) and close the lid on a small block (so
I don't pinch the cord) and leave the key in the filler hatch. That reminds
me to not ride away looking like I own the first really graceful black
electric motorcycle with an orange umbilical.

I thought my Christmas Day ride was a new record that would go unchallenged
for a while and you ruined it in the very next century! What a difference a
century makes! If you didn't see mine already, it was here
http://www.ekho.com/elton/Motorcycling.html
I will have to consult with the other members of the club to see if this New
Year's day ride makes you the new Grand Poobah of our club!
Sounds like you enjoyed the ride and now have only a 3 month or so wait
until spring riding starts again.

According to the salesman at my favorite local independent shop, the battery
maker Yuasa claims that a battery in excellent condition can still lose up
to 3% of its charge every day, especially if there is a continuous draw on
the battery (a clock or a radio with memory presets).
Hence the need for a Battery Tender or the like.
To help me justify the $34.95 that I paid for my Battery Tender, I will
sneak it away from my PC and put it on my "show" car to keep its battery in
tip top shape. I have noticed that putting the Battery Tender on the car
just one day a week (for a full 24 hours) is enough to keep it at a full
charge also. I keep one of the battery cables off when it sits to keep any
source of drain away.

Local Retreads Group made a 130 mile ride thru the Ozarks today, 10
riders 3 PC's, 3 WINGS, 1 SABRE and a HELEX. Temp in low 50's to start
and mid 60's by end. What a way to start a new century. We know of 13
PC's in the Springfield area and have had as many as 7 on a couple of our
weekly rides. For those the have not been to the Ozarks come on down it's
a great riding area, rolling hills with just enough twist to keep it
interesting but still be able to enjoy scenery. Being we are Retreads we
know where all the good off the beaten path eating places are. If your
coming to the Springfield/ Branson area send me a note and I will show

Happy 2000, all!
As long as the car is not running, jumping the bike off the car's battery is
pretty safe. The huge (compared to the PC's) charging output of most
automobiles does have the capability to do some damage, but as long as it is
just straight off the battery, and you start cranking your motorcycle soon as
you hook up, you wont hurt anything. I have seen this done from a Yamaha
Trailmaster 80cc to Harley's, and it never cooked anything as long as the
car engine was shut off.

Thanks for the comments about using the portable battery. I think
the SecureStart may not the same cranking amperage as a regular car
battery. For one thing, it is only about one half the size of one.
I have seen one used on a rental car I had once. The battery was
dead and the service person connected the portable battery like a
regular connection using jumper cables. I will probably carry it around
in the trunk of my car. It is a completely sealed unit. It even has a
flashlight on the front of it.
The weather is beautiful here today in LA (Lower Alabama). Believe
it or not, the high is supposed to be 77 F today. Guess what I will be
doing?

I heard my first Y2K bug stories today. A friend's friend's
videorecorder suddenly had no sound. He thought it had
something to do with dirty heads or so, but it appeared
that when he set the year back to '99 the sound would
work again. Another bug apparently in Paris, I just
heard the news that the clock on the Eifel tower failed
at midnight. They also say they're still waiting for
the new millennium there.... I doubt that last part...
although you never know.. strange guys those French...

I should think that would be fine. It's okay to jump bikes batteries from cars as long as the car is turned off at the time - so as long as this SureStart connected right to the bike's battery it'd be about he same thing. I'd hesitate to plug it in anywhere else, out of concern for the current draw.
