Who are the Knights?

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1.6 million members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people.

As a member of St. Michael the Archangel Council, you will discover many ways to answer God's call to service - within the council, the Church, our community, our families, and with the youth. Membership in the Knights of Columbus opens doors through networking. You'll meet people with talents and skills you may need someday - and others may discover how you can help them. If you choose to get involved on a larger scale, you may expand that network over the entire county of San Diego, the state of California, or the whole of North America! Wherever you go, you will meet Knights! Perhaps above all else, you'll make friends who share your values of faith and family - true friends for life who you'll call, "Brother."

As a member of the Knights of Columbus you and your family enjoy many benefits, including 12 free issues annually of the Columbia magazine, the world's largest Catholic family magazine, eligibility to join the Knights of Columbus top-ranked life insurance program, and many more family and personal benefits.

How To Join

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practicing Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who are at least 18 years old. A practicing Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the precepts of the Church. Application forms are available from any member of the Knights of Columbus.

Our council's membership director is Brother Ron Burtley. He may be reached by clicking this link. He will be happy to provide you with literature about membership, answer any questions you may have, and get you an application for membership!

4th Degree EmblemAny Third Degree member in good standing, one year after the anniversary of his First Degree, is eligible for membership in the Fourth Degree. The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to

foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of and loyalty to the Knights' respective countries through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups (called "assemblies"). Certain members of the Fourth Degree serve as honor guards at civic and religious functions, an activity that has brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus.

Ladies Auxiliary

The Ladies Auxiliary, though not yet formally organized within our council, serves as a companion to the Knights of Columbus. Their primary purpose is to share in the service and fun we have as a council. By involving the whole family in our organization, we strengthen the bond we have within each and between all Knights' families

Squires EmblemUnder the guidance of Christian Brother Barnabas McDonald (1865-1929), the first Columbian Squires circle was instituted in 1925. Membership in the Squires is for Catholic boys between the ages of 10 and 17. Squires' activities are many, varying from spiritual to active service for the Church and community. Each circle elects officer members from their own rank, teaching skills of leadership and responsibility.

Our council is proud to have just completed the process of organizing a Squires Circle! The circle is known as Fr. Mychal Judge, Circle 4706. Thirteen members went through their investiture on 15 December 2001 and held their installation of officers on 19 January 2002. The circle's business meetings are held on third Tuesdays at 7:00 pm. A site for the Squires is on its way! More information can obtained from our Chief Counsellor.
