The photos are by both Doug and me. Matterhorn Peak is a 12,200 foot peak near Bridgeport off Hwy 395. It is in the Sawtooth Range, the most northern "alpine-like" subrange in the Sierra Nevada. The Twin Lakes trailhead is at 7,100 feet. The first two miles of the approach is on good trail and thereafter is tough on increasingly indistinct climber's trail. This trip was a climb of the North Arete (5.7). SuperTopo gives a lengthy description (http://www.supertopo.com/packs/highsierra.html). The descent by the East Couloir is third class. A less difficult (though still challenging) hiking ascent route is to continue all the way up Horse Creek to Horse Creek Pass and then head west to the summit (this is second class).
